De zin van gescheiden systemen vervalt als deze niet volledig gescheiden zijn. De leveranciers van motoren en de classificatie maatschappij eisen dat als de oliedruk wegvalt, bijv. door een leidingbreuk, de motoren op de alarmering direct stoppen.
Dat alle hoofdmotoren (vrijwel) gelijktijdig stilvallen wijst er op dat o.a. de smeeroliesystemen (tank, pomp, filters, leidingenbewaking en alarmering) niet volledig gescheiden zijn ondanks de opstelling (2x2) in twee aparte machinekamers.
Voor de machinisten is het niet moeilijk om de oorzaak van de black-out snel op te sporen aan de hand van de alarmering en vervolgens de motoren weer aan de gang te krijgen als de systemen goed zouden zijn uitgelegd.
De hoofdmotoren werden naar de eisen van de leverancier en de klasse op het smeerolie alarm automatisch gestopt, hoe zit het met de “redundancy” (dubbele systemen per hoofdmotor) vwb de voortstuwing bij dit type cruise schepen.
Zijn de overige cruciale zaken zoals bijvoorbeeld de brandstoftoevoer hoofdmotoren op de Viking Sky wel volledig gescheiden ?

With multiple investigations under way, regarding why the ship sailed into bad weather, echoes of similar past incidents come to mind. Over the past few years, even as the number of major weather events experienced at sea has increased, so too have reports of captains making the seemingly ill-advised decision to sail into them.
Meanwhile, the fact that the conditions rendered the lifeboats useless and made rescue-by-sea impossible lead to a bigger, more troubling question: If after hours of airlifts, only around 400 of the 1,300 people on board were rescued, what would happen should a similar set of circumstances unfold on a mega-ship holding over 5,000 passengers?
Not to side with the naysayers, but this does seem like a question which should be addressed… before we learn the answer the hard way.

PASSENGER SHIP RAN AGROUND, SANK IN GALAPAGOS WATERS

Passenger ship Galapagos Majestic ran aground at Santiago island northern coast, Galapagos Archipelago, at around 0930 UTC May 31, with 26 people on board. Hull was breached in bow area, and despite salvage attempts, by the Ecuadorian Navy and the Coastguard, which lasted some 6 hours, the ship capsized and sank, with some 2 tons of fuel on board. All 26 people were rescued in two boats and taken to Puerto Ayora aboard the "Isla San Cristóbal" of the Coast Guard.
