15.24.060 Fire Suppression Systems.
An approved automatic fire suppression system is required and shall be installed and maintained in an operable condition as specified in this chapter in the following locations and occupancies. The occupancy classifications used in this chapter are the same as those used in the current version of the International Building Code (IBC) as adopted by the Arlington Municipal Code. All Fire Suppression Systems (including all above and below ground components) shall be designed and installed in accordance with the current edition of NFPA and IFC requirements, and any other applicable City of Arlington standards and regulations. For the purposes of the section, a firewall, or occupancy separation shall not constitute a separation between buildings, structures, or areas within a building or structure.
Group A Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout buildings and portions thereof used as Group A-1, A-3, and A-4, occupancies where the fire area exceeds 10,000 square feet or more.
Group A-2 Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group A-2 occupancies where the fire area exceeds 5,000 square feet.
Group A-5 Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided in concession stands, retail areas, press boxes and other accessory use areas in excess of 1,000 square feet.
Group B Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group B occupancies where the fire area exceeds 10,000 square feet.
Group E Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group E occupancies where the fire area exceeds 10,000 square feet.
Exception: Portable school classrooms provided the aggregate area of clusters of portable school classrooms does not exceed 5,000 square feet; and clusters of portable school classrooms shall be separated as required in chapter 5 of the International Building Code.
For the purposes of this subsection, additions exceeding 60 percent of the current assessed valuation of the building or structure, or other alterations and repairs to any portion of a building or structure that occur within a 12 month period that exceeds 100 percent of the value of such buildings or structure shall be considered new construction.
Group F Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all buildings containing Group F occupancies where the fire area exceeds 10,000 square feet.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group F occupancy fire areas that contain woodworking operations in excess of 2,500 square feet in area which generate finely divided combustible waste or use finely divided combustible materials.
Group H Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group H occupancies.
Group I Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group I occupancies.
Group M Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group M occupancies where the fire area exceeds 10,000 square feet or more on any floor or a combined fire area of 20,000 square feet on all floors.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group M occupancies 3 stories above grade.
The area of mezzanines shall be included in determining the areas where fire suppression systems are required.
Group R Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group R occupancies.
Exception: Group R-3 shall apply to the provisions of the International Residential Code as provided in Arlington Municipal Code Section 16.10.
Group S Occupancies.
An automatic fire suppression system shall be provided throughout all Group S occupancies where the fire area exceeds 10,000 square feet.
