A POLICE officer has been suspended following the fatal collision which killed 16-year-old Hayley Adamson.
The deadly crash happened as the Northumbria Police marked car was believed to be searching for a stolen vehicle.
Hayley had stepped out in Denton Road, Newcastle, and was struck, killing her at the scene.
Today her best friend’s mother spoke of the tragedy.
Laura Henricks, the mother of Hayley’s friend Rebecca, said: “I have known Hayley since she was five or six. We have seen Rebecca and Hayley grow up together.
“Rebecca always said she was a great mate. She was very placid and lovely looking. How can you say anything when a girl of 16 dies who has only just left school? It’s just incomprehensible.”
Hayley and Rebecca were supposed to sit their English GCSE exam today.
Rebecca went to school to let everyone know and to organise an assembly in Hayley’s memory.
The girls celebrated their 16th birthdays in March. They were planning on getting a house together when they left school.
Mrs Henricks, of Yewcroft Avenue, Scotswood, Newcastle, said: “At about 11.50pm there was a knock at the door, I thought if someone knocks at the door late, there’s something wrong.
“I had to wake Rebecca up and tell her – she wouldn’t believe me until she went across the road to see Hayley’s sister Sarah. They were together every single day.
“If it wasn’t in the day it was in the evening. Rebecca says now she realises why I go mad when she’s late because something like this could happen, it’s just terrible.”
Hayley was a bridesmaid less than two weeks ago at her sister Sarah’s wedding on May 10. Sarah also lives on Yewcroft Avenue.
Hayley’s friends were told of her death as they arrived to sit GCSE exams this morning.
Headteacher at Sacred Heart High, Pat Wager broke the news to staff during a meeting at 8.30am and announcements were then made to the younger pupils during assembly.
Mrs Wager said: “Our priority this morning was to inform and look after the children.”
Hayley’s friend David Forrest, 20, of Whickham View, was there when it happened.
He said: “We were crossing the road, I looked and there was nothing coming. I just heard a bang and a body was lying on the floor.
“My pal was kicking off at police, they Tasered him, and he was arrested. She was a great lass.”
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that the police officer who was driving the marked police car involved in the incident is currently suspended from operational duty which includes driving. Denton Road remains closed at this time."
