Brand op cruiseschip met 2200 opvarenden

Een cruiseschip met ruim 2200 personen aan boord is dinsdagochtend getroffen door brand voor de Italiaanse kust bij Venetië.
Het schip kan niet verder varen. Dat meldden Italiaanse media.

In de machinekamer van het cruiseschip Zenith brak vroeg in de ochtend brand uit. Deze werd snel geblust. Geen van de 1670 passagiers
en 600 bemanningsleden raakten bij de brand gewond.

De Zenith zal daarom naar de haven van Venetië worden gesleept.
Het schip van de Spaanse rederij Pullmantur ligt nu nog op 32 kilometer afstand van de stad Chioggia, ten zuiden van Venetië.

Fire in engine room

Fire broke out in engine room of cruise liner Zenith
at 03:48 LT June 25 13.
Vessel with 1672 passengers on board was en route from Ravenna
to Venice. Crew extinguished fire by own means, but engine
was damaged and liner had to anchor some 17 nautical miles
off Venice.

Liner is to be towed to Venice, as of 14:00 UTC June 25 vessel
was in the same position with four tugs nearby. Nobody was
injured, company said engine will be fixed within 24 hours

Tugs Reach MOL Comfort, Sister Ship Inspections Commence in Earnest.

Three tugs and a patrol boat arrived on scene yesterday near the two floating sections of the MOL Comfort.

According to a statement by the shipowner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), an additional vessel is scheduled to arrive on the 26th to assist with the salvage, or “rescue” of the hulls and cargo as MOL is describing it.

“We have started an investigation of the causes together with the shipbuilder, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries,” notes MOL in their latest update. In conjunction with the shipbuilder and the classification society, ClassNK, thorough inspections of the six sister ships, the MOL Creation, MOL Charisma, MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, MOL Competence, and MOL Commitment are to begin at the earliest possible opportunity*). Additionally, MOL notes that operational procedures to reduce hull stress on these vessels are also being carried out as an interim contingency plan.

Twee helften gebroken schip kunnen geborgen worden

Het lijkt erop dat de twee helften van het containerschip 'MOL Comfort' geborgen kunnen worden, zegt teamleider Marius Bakker van schade-expert Cunningham Lindsey in Rotterdam.


Hij zegt dat op basis van de eerste inspecties die zijn uitgevoerd door mensen van Smit en Nippon Salvage die maandag met patrouille- en bergingsschepen bij de delen van het ongeluksschip zijn gearriveerd.Vanaf de 'Capricorn', een sleepboot uit Sri Lanka die bij het voorste gedeelte van de 'MOL Comfort' is aangekomen, is volgens Bakker bij een eerste inspectie vastgesteld dat die scheepshelft weliswaar drie meter naar voren helt (‘met de kop naar beneden drijft’), maar dat een waterdicht schot nog in orde is. 'En dat is goed nieuws voor de berging. Het lijkt erop dat het er vrij goed uit ziet.'

De sleepboot 'Pacific Terrier' bevindt zich elders op de Arabische Zee bij het andere, achterste deel van de 'MOL Comfort'. 'Ook dat lijkt er goed uit te zien', aldus Bakker. 'Van dat deel is de machinekamer nog in tact, en het is het gedeelte met het meeste drijfvermogen.'

De afstand tussen de twee delen van het schip, die beide richting India drijven, groeit met de dag. Het voorste deel gaat zo hard, dat het binnen een week op de kust van India zou zijn gelopen, als de sleepboten er niet op tijd bij zouden zijn geweest. Het achterste deel, dat voor het weekend 170 kilometer achterop lag, vaart inmiddels 360 kilometer achter het voorstuk.

Als de bergingsoperatie inderdaad met succes op gang zou komen, is het nog wel de vraag welke haven bereid is de delen van de 'MOL Comfort' te ontvangen, aldus Bakker. 'Want je zal als ontvangende haven onder meer met stank te maken krijgen. De stroom op de reefercontainers is er al een tijdje af.'

MOL Comfort Towing Commences, Sister Ships Inspected [UPDATE 2]

Update 2 (26 JUN):  Mitsui O.S.K. Lines confirmed via statement that towing has commenced on the fore part of the MOL Comfort toward the Arabian Gulf. Crews continue to monitor the aft part and are preparing for the tow operation.

MOL also confirmed that no oil sheen has been spotted around the fore part. A small sheen has been spotted around the aft section, but there is no sign of a large spill at this time.

Zoekactie naar vermist persoon. 26 juni 2013

 De Kustwacht heeft afgelopen avond en nacht met veel materieel gezocht naar een mogelijk vermist persoon nabij Ter Heijde. Rond 21.50 uur kwam op het Kustwachtcentrum een melding binnen van KNRM-station Scheveningen dat op strand nabij Ter Heijde kleding was gevonden. Door het Kustwachtcentrum zijn de reddingboten van KNRM Scheveningen, Ter Heijde en Hoek van Holland gealarmeerd, alsmede een defensie helikopter. Later voegden zich nog een politie helikopter, eenheden van diverse strandreddingbrigades en een vaartuig van de Haven van Rotterdam bij de zoekende eenheden. Zij hebben tot na middernacht een groot gebied afgezocht langs de kust. Daarna heeft het Kustwachtvliegtuig nogmaals het gebied tussen Hoek van Holland en Scheveningen doorzocht met infrarood apparatuur. Er werd niets aangetroffen.
 Aan de landzijde heeft de politie het duingebied doorzocht. Ook dat leverde niets op.

KNRM zoekt naar drenkeling bij Ter Heijde

WESTLAND - Op de Noordzee bij het Westland wordt op dit moment gezocht naar een mogelijke denkeling. Er is alarm geslagen nadat er een het strand een stapeltje kleding is aangegetroffen.

Er zijn drie boten ingezet van de reddingsmaatschappij. Ook twee vissersboten helpen bij het zoeken. Een woordvoerder van de KNRM laat aan Omroep West weten dat het niet zeker is of er ook daadwerkelijk iemand in het water ligt. Er wordt in ieder geval voorlopig doorgezocht, ook wanneer het donker wordt, zegt de woordvoerder. Ook duikers van de brandweer en hulpverleners van de reddingsbrigade zijn aan het zoeken.

Grote zoekactie na kledingvondst

Er was op het strand een hoopje kleding gevonden, waarop kort na half tien alarm is geslagen. Gezocht werd naar een 14-jarige jongen. Bij de kleding was ook een afscheidsbrief gevonden.

Dinsdagavond 25 juni, even voor 22.00 uur melding op de pager van een persoon vermist ter hoogte van Arendsduin in ’s Gravenzande. Er was op het strand een hoopje kleding gevonden, waarop kort na half tien alarm is geslagen. Gezocht werd naar een 14-jarige jongen. Bij de kleding was ook een afscheidsbrief gevonden.

De hulpdiensten namen de brief uiterst serieus. Tal van vaartuigen, waaronder drie reddingboten van de KNRM reddingstations Hoek van Holland, Ter Heijde en Scheveningen en acht vaartuigen van de reddingsbrigades waren op zee aan het zoeken. Vanuit de lucht werd gezocht door de SAR helikopter van NHV en een politie helikopter. Op het land door KNRM en Reddingsbrigades. Rond 24.00 uur kwam een peloton ME van de politie om de duinen af te struinen, het kustwachtvliegtuig heeft na 24.00 uur de omgeving afgescand met speciale apparatuur.


 Rond middernacht werd de zoekactie gestaakt nadat alle opties en scenario’s waren uitgeplozen. De zee is tussen de zandmotor en de Noorderpier minutieus afgezocht tot een 3 mijl uit de kust. Er is geen persoon gevonden.

China's vessel Haixun 01 visits Sydney

China's largest patrol and rescue ship Haixun 01 set out for its first visit to Australia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia and arrived at Sydney's Garden Island port last Saturday morning.
The vessel departed from Shanghai on June 13, Haixun 01 and is expected to join the Asia-Pacific Heads of Maritime Safety Agencies Forum in Australia's Cairns on July 2.

It will also visit Indonesia's Jakarta port before stopping at Myanmar and Malaysia. "It's our first time to send a maritime patrol boat to visit several countries, and it's also our longest trip in terms of navigation mileage," said Zhai Jiugang, deputy director of the maritime safety administration, commenting on the 60-some day, 13,909 nautical mile trip. It's also the first time China sent a patrol and rescue ship to visit the southern hemisphere. Chief of Australian Maritime Safety Authority Graham Peachey welcomed the vessel's arrival by saying that the visit showed the close collaboration between Australia and China on maritime safety, according to Xinhua. During the weeklong visit in Sydney, AMSA personnel will meet with their Chinese counterparts and undertake a tabletop search and rescue exercise scheduled for Wednesday, said Peachey.

A series of maritime cooperation exercises, including the maritime search and rescue exercises, maritime safety management and disaster relief, will be carried out between Haixun 01 and marine authorities of the four mentioned countries, according to Xu Guoyi, head of the Shanghai Maritime Bureau and also the captain. Issues such as water traffic safety, anti-terrorism and anti-pollution will also be discussed. "The trip provides an opportunity to learn from each other and to jointly improve our capability of maritime management and service," he said, adding it strengthens the ties and exchanges between countries' development of shipping and trade. The 128.6-meter-long, 5,418-ton vessel, which has a maximum sailing distance of 18,520 km without refueling, only officially joined the Shanghai maritime authority in the middle of April and it's this brand-new vessel's first trip abroad. Haixun 01 is also equipped with a helipad to allow airborne searches and rescue missions. Furthermore the 5000 tonne vessel is Fully fitted for patrol/surveillance duties she also has impressive Towage/Salvage and firefighting capabilities including accommodation for 200 persons if needed in emergencies. "The vessel, which can also be regarded as a helicopter carrier, makes it possible to expand the cruising range for search and rescue," Zhai said. Haixun 01 is expected to return to Shanghai by Aug 9.

Update 2 (26 JUN):  Mitsui O.S.K. Lines confirmed via statement that towing has commenced on the fore part of the MOL Comfort toward the Arabian Gulf. Crews continue to monitor the aft part and are preparing for the tow operation.

MOL Comfort’s Bow Section Under Tow, Stern Sinks in 4,000 Meters of Water [IMAGES]

UPDATE: Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has just reported that the aft section of the MOL Comfort has sunk near 14’26”N 66’26”E at 16:48 JST (11:48 Dubai time) on June 27. With a water depth of 4,000 meters, no further salvage of the ship will be possible due to the extreme depth of the ocean at that position.

MOL notes that about 1,700 containers and 1,500 metric tons of fuel oil sank with this section of the vessel. Some containers are confirmed floating near the site.

The fore part is being stably towed as depicted in the following images which were sent to us this morning. Images were taken by Captain Svend Degn, master of the M/V Torm Thyra.

Earlier Report this morning:
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) reports that the aft part of the vessel has yet to be taken under tow and is “rolling heavily in adverse weather,” and that an unknown number of containers have been lost and water ingress into the cargo hold is progressing.

MOL notes that structural reinforcements will be added to the six other sister ships of the MOL Comfort at the earliest possible opportunity.

“These vessels sufficiently fill the safety standard required by ClassNK in compliance to IACS, but we will conduct upgrade works to further strengthen the hull structure at the earliest timing. This will enhance the strength of the hull twice as much as the safety standard.”

Bright pink/ yellow and black clouds were observed coming from hold no 7 and as a precaution both vessels -including MV Karar- moved upwind away from the vessel.

MOL Plans to Phase-Out and Upgrade ‘Comfort’ Sister Vessels

TOKYO- Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. announced Thursday plans to phase-out and upgrade the six sister vessels to MOL Comfort, which broke in two and partially sunk Thursday in the Arabian Sea.

In a statement on their website, MOL said that together with shipbuilder Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and classification society ClassNK, a thorough investigation will continue into the cause of the MOL Comfort incident.

The statement added that the company has decided to take extra precaution as it may take some time to identify the cause. As such, the six sister vessels in operation have already began operational precautions to reduce the stress on the hull as upgrades are planned.  MOL says that the vessels sufficiently meet safety standards required by ClassNK, but the company will begin to pull them from service to conduct hull strengthening upgrades as soon as possible.

Sister vessels to the MOL Comfort include: MOL Creation, MOL Charisma, MOL Celebration, MOL Courage, MOL Competence, MOL Commitment.

The vessels will be phased-out from service for the upgrade work and sailing schedules will be revised accordingly, the statement said.

The 2008-built MOL Comfort broke in half on June 17, 2013 while underway about 200 miles from the Yemeni coast with a load of 7,041 TEUs. All 26 crew – made up 11 Russians, 1 Ukrainian and 14 Filipinos – escaped the sinking ship on two life rafts and a lifeboat. The stern section sank with about 1,700 containers after nine days adrift in inclement weather.

Yachtsman rescued by lifeboat crews


A YACHTSMAN was rescued by lifeboat crews in waters near Swansea after a hole was torn in the hull of his boat.
Lifeboat crews from Porthcawl, Mumbles and Port Talbot teamed up with a helicopter crew from RAF Chivenor for the rescue which happened around 5.30pm Friday night off Kenfig Beach. The yacht was boarded by the helicopter crew with a salvage pump but caught fire when water levels reached the battery compartment. The skipper of the yacht and Porthcawl lifeboat crew abandoning the vessel. A spokesman for the Lifeboat crews said: "When the level of water had extinguished the fire another salvage pump was put on board along with Mumbles crew members Glynn Allen and Ben Williams. "The ingress of water was stemmed." The yacht was towed to Swansea marina and immediately lifted out of the water. James Bolter 2nd coxswain said: "The yacht had hit a substantial submerged object which had torn a hole in the hull, once the skipper was safe our priority was to ensure the vessel didn't become a danger to shipping as it was drifting into shipping lanes." Scary Scene in China as Barge Capsizes on Yangtze River, Five Missing [VIDEO]

Five people are reportedly missing after a barge capsized Monday morning on the Yangtze River in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality.

Details of the incident are still unclear, but according to local reports, the barge capsized at about 11 a.m. Monday amid strong currents and eighteen people on board went into the water. A search continues for five people still missing, including one child, according to the reports.

Seventeen of those on board were employees of a local shipping company, the reports say.
