NOORDWIJK, THE NETHERLANDS, at 20:08 a call came in at the 112 emergency centre. They reported a large fire in a residence at the Randweg, Noordwijk. 7 minutes later a group of Fire Brigades where at the scene. At 20:23 the Fire Chief scaled up the fire to a level of a huge fire.
"At the moment I arrived at the scene, the flames were already coming out of the rooftop" At first point the Fire Brigades tried to set up a first and a secondary water winning point. The first water winning point didn’t give enough water output to cover the whole area. To protect the horticulture industry behind the residence and for the attack of the residence fire, they needed more water. This residence lies in a very remote area, between the dunes and the sea. Therefore the second water winning point could only be found 2,5 kilometers away from the residence. With this in mind the Fire Chief, Henk van Luimen, decided to use the DSPA-5 or as it’s called in the Netherlands, the "blusbom".
"As soon as we threw the DSPA-5 at the ground level of the residence, we could see the flames disappear immediately!" At this point the fire was already coming through the roof of the second floor. "After one minute the same DSPA-5, did his second job!" Through the hall of the residence which is a open connection to the first floor, the aerosol smoke coming out of the DSPA-5, fought the flames at this level as well.
"All we need to do after the use of the DSPA-5, was to overhaul the smoldering deep seated fire. This we could do with minimal water capacity!" The fire was controlled at about 22:00. Not only the DSPA-5 did his job as we trained but also we saved a lot of time with not setting up a hose line from the secondary water winning point up to the residence, 2,5 kilometers away.
This is the third success in a row, since three weeks ago, DSPA-5 won the second price in the best innovation on Fire Fighting Techniques of 2008. This price, called the "Jan van der Heijden innovation price" is awarded by the Fire Chiefs from the Netherlands. Jan van der Heijden was the first inventor of the hosepipe fire engine, he lived in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, from 1637 – 1712.
More and more Fire departments in the Netherlands are training and putting the DSPA-5 on their fire engines. The DSPA-5 will save lives, gives extra critical time to respond to the situation and last but not least it will reduce loss!
