• Keuzevrijheid uit Frankrijk
• Financiering uit Zwitserland

Als we doorgaan op de ingezette koers is het de vraag of we over vijf jaar nog steeds trots kunnen zijn op ons Nederlandse zorgsysteem. Als we niet de bereidheid hebben om te leren van de wereldwijde ervaringen en bewezen best practices in andere landen, lopen we het risico van één van de beste jongetjes van de klas te verworden tot achterblijvers.

Varkensboeren hebben veel vaker MRSA dan de gemiddelde Nederlander. De bacterie komt voor bij 63 procent van de varkenshouders en bij 10 procent van hun gezinsleden.
Ook heeft 15 procent van de slachters MRSA. Van de doorsnee Nederlanders is maar 0,1 procent besmet met de bacterie.
Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van arts Brigitte van Cleef. Zij promoveert donderdag bij het VU Medisch Centrum in Amsterdam

Dan weet je weer waarom ze in het ziekenhuis vragen of je met varkens in aanraking bent geweest.

Topchirurg 'rommelde met cv, huwelijksbelofte en operaties'

Het Zweedse Karolinksa-instituut, bekend van de Nobelprijs voor geneeskunde, heeft het vertrouwen opgezegd in één van zijn supersterren: Paolo Macchiarini. De chirurg die in 2011 de eerste transplantatie van een uit stamcellen gekweekt strottenhoofd volvoerde wordt inmiddels links en rechts beschuldigd van wetenschappelijk bedrog, misleiding van patiënten en valsheid in geschrifte.

Afgelopen zomer raakte de Italiaan Macchiarini al in opspraak door een lang verhaal in het blad Vanity Fair, over zijn liefdesrelatie met een Amerikaanse televisiejournaliste van NBC die hij wijsmaakte dat de Paus zelf hun huwelijk zou inzegenen in zijn Italiaanse buitenhuis. De presidenten Obama en Poetin zouden ook op de gastenlijst staan. Daarnaast bleek hij te rommelen met zijn professionele cv; zijn training in luchtpijpchirurgie van twee jaar was in werkelijkheid een niet-chirurgische stage van een halfjaar.

Match4Zara: Social media boosts cell donor search

The family of a 13-year-old girl urgently seeking a blood stem cell donor are "amazed" by the response they have received on social media.
Zara Al Shaikh, who has acute myeloid leukaemia, opened a Twitter account with her father to appeal for help.
Her second tweet has been shared more than 8,000 times.
They were inspired by the #MatchForLara campaign that went viral and helped find a donor for another young woman from a mixed-race background.

A 13-year-old teen's call for help finding a bone marrow donor has gone viral.

Zara Al Shaikh, of Hampshire, United Kingdom, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 11. She went into remission the following year, but this month her doctors found the cancer had returned. To save her this time, doctors need to find a bone marrow donor, said her father, Dr. Loua Al Shaikh, an intensive care physician and anesthesiologist.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) has refuted rumours on social media about the spread of Crimean-Congo Haemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) in Buraimi.

However, it has confirmed the death of one Omani due to this infection, and has said that measures are being taken to control its spread. Details of how the man got the CCHF virus are not known.
