ESC: No Age Limit on Resuscitation
BARCELONA -- Older patients in their 80s who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest appeared to benefit from resuscitation, researchers said here.
Among 4,000 individuals who had an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Copenhagen during the period 2002-2011, about 1,000 were over age 80, and resuscitation was successful in 25% of the latter compared with 40% of younger individuals, reported Helle Søholm, MD, from University Hospital in Copenhagen, and colleagues at the European Society of Cardiology meeting.

The researchers found that 40% of the sudden cardiac arrests occurred in women. Bystanders were more often present when cardiac arrests occurred in women than when they occurred in men, but only 60% of women received basic life support, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), compared to 70% of men.

“When a man has a cardiac arrest he is less likely to have witnesses but they perform CPR more frequently,” said Dr Karam. “Probably people are more afraid to do CPR in women because we look fragile. They may also not believe that she is really having a cardiac arrest – even though we found that 40% of patients were women.”

The researchers found that 18% of women made it to the hospital alive compared to 26% of men.

Fast action helps save life

John Vigar remembers going to his bowls game one afternoon and waking up the next morning in the Royal Adelaide Hospital. What happened in between can only be recalled by others.

Mr Vigar’s heart stopped and he collapsed on the green. Fellow bowlers recognised trouble, commenced CPR and called triple zero.

They also used the automatic external defibrillator (AED) the club had purchased and been trained to use by local doctor Tim Leeuwenburg and his wife Trish (both local volunteer ambulance officers).

Bystander CPR May Boost Survival Odds When Ambulance Delayed

Citaat
Copenhagen, January 08 (QNA) - Cardiac arrest patients who get cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from a bystander at the scene may have better survival odds even when an ambulance takes a long time to arrive, a Danish study suggests.

Researchers examined data on 7,623 cardiac arrest patients and found when an ambulance arrived within five minutes of a 911 call, patients were 2.3 times more likely to survive at least 30 days if they received bystander CPR than if they didn't get this aid at the scene.

Dokter Shahzleen Rajan publiceert het volgende: Researchers examined data on 7,623 cardiac arrest patients and found when an ambulance arrived within five minutes of a 911 call, patients were 2.3 times more likely to survive at least 30 days if they received bystander CPR than if they didn't get this aid at the scene.
