Philadelphia Building Collapse: Woman Rescued as Death Toll Rises to 6

A 14th survivor was pulled from the rubble of a collapsed four-story building in central Philadelphia minutes after officials said six people were killed and at least 13 people were injured.

Rescue workers used buckets and their bare hands to move bricks and rubble to free a 61-year-old woman late Wednesday night identified as Myra Plekam of Kensington, Pa., Philadelphia Public Safety Director Michael Resnick said.

Shots Fired, Suspect Down At Santa Monica College
SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) — Santa Monica College has been put on lockdown Friday after a shooting was reported in the library.
A suspect was down on campus, according to Santa Monica police. Multiple injuries were reported, but it was unclear how many people were hurt.
According to reports, a worker on campus heard dozens of gunshots and saw students, who are taking final exams on the campus this week, scrambling for safety.
There were unconfirmed reports of a man was reportedly seen shooting at cars just after noon.
President Barack Obama is in Santa Monica speaking at a luncheon fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee about a 10-minute drive from where the shooting took place.
It’s not known if the shooting is related to his presence in the city.

Louisiana: Explosion in Williams Olefins Chemical Plant
At least 15 people have been injured in an explosion at a chemical plant in Louisiana, according to local reports.
Fire, ambulance and rescue teams have rushed to the Williams Olefins plant alongside Highway 30. Residents have been warned by police to stay inside their homes.

73 injured, 1 dead in chemical plant explosion
Officials with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) reports that 73 people were injured and one person died in a Thursday morning plant explosion in Geismar, La.
Louisiana State Police now confirm that there has been one fatality. During a news conference with Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, he reports that 73 people were injured in the explosion.  Eight of those patients are being treated at Baton Rouge General Hospital. Of those eight, only one is in critical condition and two are in serious condition.

Weer fatale explosie in kunstmestfabriek VS


 Opnieuw zijn in de Amerikaanse staat Louisiana slachtoffers gevallen door een explosie bij een kunstmestfabriek.

Een persoon is overleden en minstens acht mensen raakten gewond door de ontploffing die zich vrijdagavond (lokale tijd) voordeed bij de fabriek in Donaldsonville, meldden diverse lokale media.

Enkele tientallen kilometers verderop in de plaats Geismar vielen een dag eerder twee doden en 77 gewonden door een explosie bij een andere chemische fabriek.

Volgens de website van eigenaar CF Industries is de fabriek waar de ontploffing van vrijdag gebeurde de grootste in zijn soort van Noord-Amerika. Het was niet het eerste ongeluk bij het bedrijf. In het jaar 2000 kwamen er ook al drie mensen om het leven door een ontploffing, meldt de regionale krant The Advocate.

CF Industries werd destijds beboet vanwege diverse overtredingen van normen op het gebied van veiligheid en gezondheid, aldus de krant. De oorzaak van de explosie van vrijdag is nog onbekend. Het ongeluk gebeurde terwijl een tankwagen werd vol- of leeggepompt.

Bij een ontploffing van een vuurwerkopslagplaats in Montreal in Canada zijn twee doden gevallen. In een groot gebied ten westen van Montreal is zwarte rook te zien.
