OCHA Flash Update No.1- Philippines Earthquake
A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines island of Bohol, early Tuesday morning, a little after 8am local time. The effects of the quake were felt in Cebu city which is about 37 miles (60 kilometers) north of the epicenter.
The Philippines Office of Civil Defense (OCD) confirmed four people killed in Bohol province and two in Cebu. Several structures in Bohol, including churches and homes have been damaged. In Cebu, a church collapsed along with an open market. Mactan airport in Cebu also suffered damages with several cracks appearing on the runway. Seaports in Bohol and Cebu have been affected. Several aftershocks have been reported which may cause additional damage to weakened structures. There are fears that people may be trapped inside these structures. In response, the local government has mobilized quick response teams and is assessing further damage.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) there is no immediate threat of a tsunami. PHIVOLCS reports the quake was centered about 629 kilometers south-southeast of Manila, near Carmen in Bohol province, with a depth of 33 kilometers. The earthquake intensity was measured at level '7' which is considered 'destructive'.Carmen has a population of 43,000 people. Cebu has a population of 866,000.
The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in the Philippines has expressed her condolences to the Government and has offered assistance to help the affected people. The United Nations and its humanitarian partners stand ready to support the Government's ongoing efforts for relief, assistance and assessments.
