Innovative fire alarm for deaf debuts at Civil Defence Expo

DOHA: An innovative fire alert life-saving solution for aurally challenged people made its worldwide debut at the fourth Qatar Civil Defence Exhibition and Conference here reaffirms Qatar's push for safety and security of differently-abled members of society.

Exhibited by National Fire Fighting Manufacturing (NAFFCO) Qatar, the radio paging technology based fire alarm warning and public address messaging system called Deaf Alerter is a life-saving solution for hearing-impaired people who have to carry a pager-size portable receiver, company executives said.

Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), NAFFCO Marketing Engineer Vinod Karayil said, "In case of fire, the portable receiver, known as an Alerter, which is always switched on, vibrates vigorously and sends fire alarm messages that the user cannot cancel.

"He or she has to evacuate the building to stop the receiver from vibrating."

The receiver is linked by radio frequency to a tamper-proof transmitter panel which is integrated with the Building Management System (BMS) that is linked to fire alarm system, he said.

The Deaf Alerter DA3000 transmitter system, making its worldwide debut at the Qatar Civil Defence expoion, is manufactured by UK-based Deaf Alerter (DA) Plc.

Besides day-time, it also offers night-time protection.

DA Export Manager Chris Sharman said, "An asleep deaf person is alerted by a pillow pad which vibrates and the night cradle, powered by internal battery UPS, which docks the Alerter, flashes continuously if the fire alarm is activated."

The Deaf Alerter system uses radio paging technology, but it is designed and manufactured to Fire Alarm Standards, fully compliant with BS5839 pt 1 and EN54-2 and EN54-4, he said.

"A deaf person will and should have the same level of protection as people with normal hearing."

"It is a universal system which means any of our Alerter units will work in any building that has the Deaf Alerter installed," Sharman said.

However, the company is not marketing a unit for residential homes in Qatar.

Explaining the reasons, Sharman said, "The system is designed as a commercial system and is built to commercial fire alarm standards."

"We have looked at the domestic market in the past but felt that providing a 'technically lower standard' of system would not be in our best interests as either a business or as a brand." (QNA)
