Full speed ahead for Brigade fleet
press release: PR046/05
date: 29 June 2005
London’s firefighters are well on the way to a complete overhaul of their front-line fleet of fire engines.
Nearly 100 new Mercedes fire engines have now been delivered to the capital’s fire stations six months ahead of schedule in the first stage of a programme to replace the Brigade’s pumping appliances. Discussions are now underway with the Brigade’s vehicle provider to replace the remaining appliances by early 2007.
Also nearing completion is a programme to replace the Brigade’s five old fire rescue units with ten new units that have more modern equipment. Fire rescue units supply vital front line equipment at incidents such as road traffic accidents. Other initiatives include the introduction of new turntable ladder appliances which are due to come into service next year and other specialist vehicles for larger incidents such as bulk water carriers and major lighting systems that are also about to join the Brigade’s fleet.
The London Fire Brigade’s vehicle fleet is provided and maintained by AssetCo Emergency Ltd in a 20-year Public Finance Initiative (PFI) contract.
London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority Chair Val Shawcross said: “This is good news for the London Fire Brigade and for Londoners. These new fire engines are better than their predecessors and are more environmentally friendly too.
“This is a clear example of how the public and private sector can work together.”
Alle nieuwe tankautospuiten en de rescue units zijn gebouwd op Mercedes Atego chassis.
En nee hoor, in Engeland rijden ze ook veel met MAN en Mercedes. Dennis gaat er een beetje uit.
