Moroccan authorities have arrested a Belgian national of local origin directly linked to the attackers who carried out the Paris shootings and bombings in November that killed 130 people, the government said in a statement on Monday.

The interior ministry gave only the suspect's initials in Arabic and said he fought in Syria with al-Nusra front before joining the Islamic State.

The suspect was trained to handle different weapons and guerrilla tactics but left Syria through Turkey, Germany, Belgium then Netherlands from where he came to Morocco.

Paris was a failure of intelligence. All but one of the eight terrorists were French citizens, trained by ISIS in Syria. They returned, unnoticed, and attacked six locations killing 130 people.

Scott Pelley: What did you learn from Paris?

John Brennan: That there is a lot that ISIL probably has underway that we don't have obviously full insight into. We knew the system was blinking red. We knew just in the days before that ISIL was trying to carry out something. But the individuals involved have been able to take advantage of the newly available means of communication that are--that are walled off, from law enforcement officials.

Scott Pelley: You're talking about encrypted Internet communications.

John Brennan: Yeah, I'm talking about the very sophisticated use of these technologies and communication systems.

Belgium ignored a possible link between Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam and the Islamic State (IS) group just weeks ahead of the massacre that killed 130 people, broadcaster RTBF reported Tuesday.

The authorities had spotted a post on Facebook they thought belonged to Abdeslam featuring the Islamic State flag three weeks before the November 13 attacks, but failed to follow up, according to the Belgian broadcaster,

Abdeslam heeft geen advocaat meer, 'Allah waakt over hem'

De advocaten van terreurverdachte Salah Abdeslam willen hem niet langer verdedigen. In een gesprek met de Vlaamse krant De Standaard zegt advocaat Frank Berton dat hij niet langer de advocaat wil zijn van iemand die besloten heeft zich niet te verdedigen. Ook de Belgische advocaat Sven Mary stopt ermee.

Sinds zijn aanhouding na de aanslagen in Parijs beroept Abdeslam zich op zijn zwijgrecht. Hij is de enige terreurverdachte die gepakt is in verband met het bloedbad op 13 november van vorig jaar.

Frédéric Van Leeuw kreeg midden in de nacht telefoon uit Parijs. "Het zijn Belgen", hoorde de topman van het Belgische Openbaar Ministerie aan de andere kant van de lijn.

De aanslagen in Parijs, dit weekend een jaar geleden, zijn bedacht, voorbereid en uitgevoerd door Belgen.

Ze maakten hun bommen op schuiladressen in Brussel.
Ze hielden tijdens de aanslagen contact met België.
Ze vluchtten na de aanslagen terug naar het land, om nog meer terreurdaden te plegen.

En dat allemaal in opdracht van Islamitische Staat.

Zeven van de terroristen waren bekend bij de Belgische inlichtingendiensten. Maar ze ook in de gaten houden, dat lukt de Belgische autoriteiten niet.
