Seventeen fire engines were at the recycling centre on Clarel Avenue in Birmingham, where 800 tonnes of metal and mixed plastic and rubber was alight.

Police say many people are feared dead or trapped after a portion of an overpass under construction collapsed in a congested area eastern India.

Police officer Subhankar Sinha said efforts were under way to rescue those trapped under the debris in the  Girish Park area of Kolkata.
