‘Cheese’ man rescue
A few seconds of mobile phone footage capture the amazing moment a warehouse worker walked free after hours trapped beneath the building’s collapsed insides.
Our urban search and rescue (USAR) experts joined the multi-agency rescue of Tomasz Wiszniewski, who survived the collapse of racking on which thousands of tons of cheese were stored.
The forklift driver was penned inside the refrigerated building for eight hours before being located and walking out of the wreckage.
The drama began on Friday morning (6 May) when our colleagues at Shropshire Fire and Rescue received a 999 call reporting the incident at a chilled storage and distribution complex near Hinstock.
Our USAR team were called to assist, under national arrangements which kick in during very serious or unusual rescue incidents.
They worked alongside search dog teams from Merseyside and Leicestershire fire and rescue services, the Hazardous Area Response Teams (HART) of West Midlands Ambulance Service and officers from West Mercia Police.
USAR carried out a full assessment of the building and collapsed racking, before the search dogs indicated an area in which Mr Wiszniewski could be.
Specialist cameras helped to pinpoint his location, before his safe exit could be planned and secured.
