Foreign minister Bert Koenders has strongly condemned the attacks in the Indonesian capital Jakarta. ‘Once again terror has raised its ugly head, and once again innocent civilians are its victims,’ said the minister. ‘My thoughts are with them and their loved ones.’Mr Koenders has offered his condolences to his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi. ‘I’ve also offered Dutch help if Indonesia should need it,’ he said.Immediately after the attacks the Dutch embassy warned Dutch people in the area that they should stay indoors. ‘People received text messages urging them to follow the local authorities’ safety instructions and stay in contact with the embassy,’ said Mr Koenders. ‘The embassy will continue to keep them informed over the next several hours.’ People who have questions can use the foreign ministry’s consular services number: +31 247 247 247.The embassy is also staying in close touch with the local authorities to find out about possible Dutch victims. So far it has learned that one Dutch man was seriously injured in an attack. The attacks show once more that terrorism has spread its tentacles all around the world, the minister said. ‘Anyone can be a victim of terrorism. Whether you’re shopping in the centre of Paris, sitting in an office in New York or on holiday in Jakarta. This is the fear that terrorists seek to plant in our hearts.’Yet we must not let fear prevail, Mr Koenders insisted. ‘We must close ranks, join forces internationally and set to work. We must be just as resolute as the terrorists are. We’ve already taken many steps along these lines, for example last week at a major counterterrorism conference in The Hague.’The dead in Jakarta include not only civilians but also police officers. ‘Professionals like these go to work every day in order to make the world a safer place,’ said the minister. ‘They are prepared to risk their lives for this important work. I admire them tremendously, and am grateful for all their efforts – police, army, ambulance staff – around the world.’
Police in the world's most populous Muslim country have blamed the carnage on a network of Islamic State fighters from Southeast Asia forged in the radical jihadist group's war in Syria and Iraq."An alert has been imposed throughout Indonesia," said national police spokesman Anton Charliyan."National police are on their highest alert, especially in areas considered targets of terror, like police stations, government offices, embassies, with army backup."
Police say Indonesian Bahrun Naim working for ISIL funded deadly attack that killed two civilians and five attackers.
