Nitrous Oxide cannisters destined for sale

Met Police licensing officers working at Notting Hill Carnival have this afternoon, Monday, 29 August seized a large canister of compressed nitrous oxide on Queensway, Westminster. Officers understand that the canister has the capacity to fill 2,250 small canisters representing a total street value of over £150,000.

In addition, approximately 1,000 small nitrous oxide canisters and associated paraphernalia have been seized in a number of separate operations.

One man in his twenties has been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply nitrous oxide. He has been taken to a west London police station for questioning.

A second man also in his twenties has been processed for possession with intent to supply nitrous oxide from Coleville Gardens.

Approximately 75 canisters, as well as balloons and a dispenser were seized from Westbourne Grove; 175 canisters were seized from Wornington Road at the junction with Goldbourne Road; over 220 canisters were seized from Portobello Road and just over 210 canisters were seized from Blenheim Crescent.

In addition, approximately 120 bottles and 500 cans of beer were seized by Westminster City Council Trading Standards, accompanied by police officers in Dartmouth close Road. The alcohol was being sold by an illegal street trader.

The investigations have been referred to Trading Standards officers from the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and City of Westminster and MPS officers from Westminster Police.

Users of nitrous oxide put themselves at risk when taking the drug. There is a risk of unconsciousness or death from lack of oxygen.

There have been four incidents where people have been stabbed. They are as follows:

- Stabbing at Wornington Road

At 16:25 on Sunday, 28 August, police were called to reports of a stabbing on Wornington Road, Kensington and Chelsea. A 15-year-old boy was taken by London Ambulance Service to a central London hospital. His condition, which was critical, is now not life threatening.

A 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of GBH and taken to a central London Police Station. Enquiries continue.

- Stabbing at Portobello Road

At 16:28hrs on Sunday, 28 August, police were called to reports of a stabbing on Portobello Road at the junction with Munro Mews. A 20-year-old man was taken by London Ambulance Service to a central London hospital where his condition is not life threatening. There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.

- Double stabbing at Ladbroke Grove

At 17:09hrs on Sunday, 28 August, police were called to reports of a stabbing at Ladbroke Grove at the junction with Treverton Street. A 16-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy were at the scene having suffered stab wounds. Both were taken by London Ambulance Service to a central London hospital. Both boy's condition are not life threatening. No arrests. Enquiries continue.

- Stabbing at Kensal Rise

A man presented himself to officers at Kensal Rise tube station and told them he had been stabbed resulting in a cut to the head. He declined to provide further details and subsequently left the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.

London Ambulance Service, working with St John Ambulance, treated over 1,000 patients at Notting Hill Carnival this bank holiday weekend – most for alcohol related illnesses and injuries.

Each day around 200 ambulance crews worked on foot – carrying lifesaving equipment on their backs – as they made their way through the crowds to treat patients who became unwell.

Tactical Commander for the carnival, Paul Gates said: “Last year we treated almost 955 patients at the Carnival, and took 144 people to hospital.

“Many of our patients needed emergency help after they had been drinking or taking drugs or had minor injuries such as cuts from broken glass.”

London Ambulance Service doctors and paramedics worked alongside St John Ambulance at the nine treatment centres in the carnival area where revellers where taken if they became unwell.

They were dispatched via radio from a special event control room set up for the carnival.

All the staff working at carnival were in addition to control room and medical staff responding to incidents across the rest of London.
