Update (No. 17): Incident Involving the Containership MOL Comfort


TOKYO-Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President: Koichi Muto) updates the status of the containership MOL Comfort as of 23:00 JST (18:00 Dubai time) on July 01, 2013. The vessel could not continue sailing under its own power from June 17 because the hull fractured in 2 parts while under way on the Indian Ocean.
1.Vessel
 The fore part is located near 17'02"N 67'57"E. The weather in the area is still adverse.
2.Containers
 The condition of the fore part is stable with majority of cargo aboard.
3.Rescue of the cargo and hulls
 We have contracted with a salvage company to rescue the cargo and hulls. The tow wire was disconnected from the fore part which was being towed in a west-northwest direction. We are working on the recovery with 3 tugboats and will resume the towing in a west-northwest direction once the work is completed.
4.Oil leakage (No change from the Update (No.16))
 We confirmed through the monitoring that no oil film around the fore part is present.

We had been monitoring the area where the aft part sank on June 27, but confirmed neither oil leakage nor floating containers visible. We have reported the same to Indian authorities and have completed the monitoring operations.

MOL Comfort’s Bow Section Breaks Free from Tow.

 Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) announced this morning that the fore section of the MOL Comfort has broken free from it’s towing wire while in “adverse” sea conditions.

It’s a bit of a setback for the salvors, however considering the situation, it’s perhaps not all that unexpected.

I spoke with veteran tugboat sailor Paul Berdy this morning to get a bit of perspective.  He notes that, “When you make up the tow from a salvage operation, the tow points don’t actually exist, so you’re kind of shooting from the hip. It’s not like you have ABS-inspected towing bits installed on the vessel, so you’re rigging on the spot to make this happen.”

mol comfort under towMOL didn’t mention how or where the towing wire became disconnected, but Berdy brings up a valid point. The fore-part of the MOL Comfort is being pulled from it’s stern, if you can really call it that, which is really nothing more than a bulkhead that used to be inside the ship. The salvors, when they came on scene, had to find the strongest part of that bulkhead, and either cut in, or install towing padeyes on to the port and starboard side of the vessel and then rig up a towing bridle to that.

It’s not like these guys were rigging up a towing bridle for a small barge, they had to tow 500 feet of containership, plus cargo, backwards through heavy seas. The gear needed for that is heavy and awkward, and had to be installed on a ship with no stern, or crane.

“With something that massive, and with that much windage, it’s a shit-fight,” notes Berdy. “You have to run slow, and then then next thing you know you’re getting snatched backwards.”

Snatching where the tow gear is stretched out to its maximum length before it pulls the tug backwards, loading up the engines and the towing gear. It typically happens when the tug and the tow are out of phase in a wave train, that is when the tug is going down a wave and the tow us going up a wave. “It’s a dangerous situation and things can, and will fail,” adds Berdy.

Zeiler valt overboord en zwemt 15 uur naar strand

Een Franse zeiler heeft een zwemtocht van vijftien uur in het koude water overleefd. De heldhaftige man zwom naar het strand nadat hij van zijn boot viel. De gedachten aan zijn familie hielden hem boven water.

UITGEEST – De brandweer van Uitgeest en Akersloot werden zaterdagavond rond half 8 opgepiept voor een boot in de problemen op het Uitgeestermeer in Uitgeest. De brandweer van Uitgeest is hierop met de brandweerboot en de werkboot van het recreatieschap Alkmaardermeer uitgerukt naar het Uitgeestermeer. Ook brandweer Akersloot rukte met de boot uit.

Ter plaatse was een pleziervaartuig half gezonken. De achterkant van de boot stond vol met water en was vastgelopen op de bodem. De zeven opvarenden waaronder kinderen en een baby waren al veilig aan wal bij aankomst van de brandweer. Een moeder met baby werd opgevangen in een politieauto met een isolatiedeken om op te warmen. Een ambulance heeft de opvarenden gecontroleerd op eventuele verwondingen, maar niemand hoefde mee naar het ziekenhuis.

Brandweer Uitgeest en Akersloot hebben met de werkboot de boot gelicht en geborgen. De oorzaak van het zinken is niet bekend.

Nederlander vermist na reddingsactie

Een Nederlandse opvarende van het opleidingsschip Wylde Swan uit Makkum is gistermorgen bij een hulpverleningsactie tussen de eilanden Öland en Gotland ten zuidoosten van Zweden in zee terecht gekomen. Er wordt gevreesd voor het leven van de vermiste.

De uit Rotterdam afkomstige Koen van Gogh was met twee anderen vrijwillig aan boord gegaan van een Noors jacht in nood toen dat door twee hoge golven de diepte in werd getrokken. Het Nederlandse trio poogde juist op dat moment door het plaatsen van pompen het schip van de ondergang te redden. Het drietal sloeg overboord.
Twee landgenoten konden worden gered, Van Gogh raakte verward in de tuigage en bleef op het Noorse jacht achter dat zonk. Er is uren vergeefs naar de Rotterdammer gezocht. Zijn twee makkers zijn met onbekend letsel opgenomen in een Zweeds ziekenhuis.

Aan boord van de Wylde Swan, een tweemastschoener die met 62 meter behoort tot de langste in zijn soort ter wereld, werd geen moment geaarzeld toen een noodsignaal van het Noorse jacht Wyvern werd opgevangen om hulp. Helikopters waren inmiddels onderweg om de acht opvarenden van het bedreigde jacht van boord te halen. Die operatie verliep vlekkeloos.

De inzet door de lucht moest korte tijd later worden herhaald voor het Nederlandse trio, nadat vanaf de Wylde Swan alarm was geslagen dat de drie mannen overboord waren geslagen tijdens hun moedige poging om het Noorse schip te behouden.

Nederlandse zeiler uit Oostzee geborgen

De Zweedse kustwacht heeft zondag in de Oostzee met behulp van een onderwaterrobot een vermiste opvarende van een Nederlands zeilschip kunnen bergen. De jonge Nederlander uit Eindhoven is afgelopen week waarschijnlijk verdronken na aan boord te zijn gegaan van een zinkend Noors zeilschip.

Het Noorse schip Wevers ligt sinds donderdag op 55 meter diepte, tussen de Zweedse eilanden land en Gotland. Het schip maakte door nog onbekende reden water, terwijl het op weg was naar de Tall Ships Race in het Finse Helsinki.
De tien Noorse bemanningsleden werden door de Zweedse kustwacht gered, maar daarna gingen drie mensen van een Nederlands zeilschip aan boord van de zinkende Wyvern. Twee van hen werden later door Zweedse redders uit het water gevist, de derde was vermist tot zondagmiddag
Een Zweeds kustwachtvaartuig heeft met een speciaal echoapparaat (Multibeam) zaterdagnamiddag de Wyvern teruggevonden op 55 meter diepte. Meevarende reddingsduikers konden echter niets doen, omdat ze voor hun eigen veiligheid niet dieper dan 40 meter mogen. Zondag bood de robot uitkomst.

Missing Lobster Fisherman Rescued After 12 Hours At Sea Without Lifejacket

The U.S. Coast Guard has located and rescued the missing crewmember of a commercial lobster vessel who had fallen overboard overnight while off the coast of Montauk.

John Aldridge, a crewmember of the 44-foot lobster vessel Anna Mary, was last seen aboard the boat during his watch relief at 9 p.m., Tuesday, while the vessel was underway off Montauk, N.Y.

Coast Guard watchstanders received a call from his fellow crewmembers at approximately 6:30 a.m., Wednesday, reporting that he had gone missing based on missed watch relief times and being unresponsive to callbacks from another fishing vessel at 4 a.m. Aldridge was reported to be not wearing a life jacket when he went missing.

Rescue crews from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York coordinated to develop and conduct a search pattern that covered more than 780 square miles, more than half the size of the state of Rhode Island, the Coast Guard said.

Amazingly, eight hours after the initial report, a Coast Guard helicopter located Aldridge floating some 36 nautical miles south of Montauk, N.Y. The air crew deployed a rescue swimmer who hoisted Aldridge to safety.

“This ending had a lot of people shaking hands and smiling,” said Lt. Joe Klinker, First Coast Guard District public affairs officer. “Reports of persons in the water often mean a difficult search is ahead. To hear the call that he was found and rescued makes it a proud day for those Coast Guard crews.”

Petty Officer Jetta Disco, a Coast Guard spokesperson, said that Aldridge had been in the water for roughly 12 hours after falling overboard, without a life jacket.

Aldridge told the helicopter crew he used his rubber boots for flotation. He was treated for dehydration, exposure and hypothermia and transferred to Falmouth Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.

Haven Den Oever dicht voor oude zeemijn

DEN OEVER - Het haventerrein van Den Oever is vanmiddag voor enige tijd afgesloten geweest in verband met vondst van een zeemijn bij de visafslag. Deze is door onbekenden opgevist en bij de visafslag neergelegd.
De mijn lag er volgens omstanders 's morgens al. 's Middags werd het terrein door de politie afgezet. Nieuwsgierigen die op de Havendijk toekeken, werd verzocht achter de dijk te blijven uit voorzorg, in afwachting van de Explosievenopruimingsdienst (EOD).

Toen de twee inspecteurs van de EOD waren gearriveerd, bleek al vrij snel dat de er geen acuut gevaar was. Nadat zij, met behulp van een detector, een kennersblik op de zwaar beschadigde mijn hadden geworpen, keerden ze hem om, teneinde goed in het gat aan de onderkant te kunnen kijken.

“We laten hem ophalen voor verder onderzoek en zullen hem indien nodig elders tot ontploffing brengen,” aldus een van de inspecteurs tegen onze verslaggever. De gemeentelijke havendienst zegt niet te weten wie de mijn heeft opgevist en bij de afslag heeft neergelegd.

Afgelopen nacht is het zeiljacht Tizmon's Ensueno gestrand bij IJmuiden, na een goede samenwerking tussen de IJmuider Reddingsbrigade, KNRM IJmuiden, KNRM Zandvoort en de brandweer van post IJmuiden is het gelukt het jacht weer tijdens opkomend water weer vlot te krijgen. Het jacht is daarna door de Koos van Messen naar de Seaport Marine gesleept.
