Tsunami eist mensenlevens op Samoa

Op Amerikaans Samoa is een onbekend aantal doden gevallen door een tsunami. Volgens de eerste berichten zijn drie doden en 50 gewonden naar ziekenhuizen gebracht.

De tsunami ontstond door een zeebeving van 8.0 op de schaal van Richter. Het centrum lag 35 km onder de zeebodem, 2600 kilometer ten oordoosten van Nieuw-Zeeland. Veel eilanden zijn al door de gevolgen getroffen. Ze hebben niet allemaal bergen en heuvels die de kust beschermen.

Voor een groot gebied, tot aan Nieuw- Zeeland en Hawaii, is een waarschuwing voor een tsunami afgegeven.

Tsunami wave comes ashore in NZ

  A 40-centimetre tsunami wave has come ashore in New Zealand at East Cape but there are no reports of damage.

The Civil Defence authority told ONE News waves have hit in East Cape and they are now monitoring the rest of the country particularly Northland, the Coromandel, the Bay of Plenty and the East Coast north of Gisborne.

John Hamilton from the Civil Defence Emergency Management Centre says a 40 centimetre wave was detected in the East Cape area.
He says it is the wave they expected and believes an all clear may be able to be announced shortly.
However, warnings are still in place throughout the rest of the country and people should stay off all beaches.
Tararua District Council has made a decision as a precaution to evacuate residents from the east coast residential settlements of Herbertville and Akitio wtih the aid of police.
Residents in low-lying areas of the Coromandel coast were moved to higher ground with the assistance of fire service staff.
Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management has revised the times it expects a tsunami to affect the region.

It now expects a wave of around a metre high to possibly hit the east coast of the region about 11am, and to possibly affect the west coast of the region around 11.40am
Harbourmasters are being told by Environment Waikato not to move on the water.
Waikato Civil Defence says people living or working on the coasts should be on high alert especially residents in Raglan, Kawhia and Mokau and all coastal settlements near these areas.

Hawke's Bay Civil Defence is telling residents to keep away from beaches and residents of Te Kaha, East Cape have been instructed to go to high ground.
Napier, Northland and Southland have also issued alerts.

Auckland regional authorities are advising people on Great Barrier Island, Waiheke Island and on regional coastlines to seek higher ground.
Kiwifruit marketer Zespri has taken the decision to evacuate its office in Mount Maunganui in response to the warning.

WASHINGTON - Zeker negentien mensen zijn dinsdag om het leven gekomen door een tsunami in Amerikaans Samoa en in de onafhankelijke staat Samoa.

Dat heeft het Tsunami Waarschuwingscentrum bekendgemaakt.

Dat blijkt uit mededelingen van een lokaal radiostation op Amerikaans Samoa en van een woordvoerder van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken van Nieuw-Zeeland.


De verwoestende vloedgolven ontstonden na een zware aardbeving op de bodem van de Grote Oceaan. Die had een kracht van 8,3 op de schaal van Richter.

Amerikaans Samoa

Op Amerikaans Samoa, het oostelijke deel van de eilandengroep, vonden zeker veertien mensen de dood.

Dat zouden de autoriteiten hebben bekendgemaakt, zo meldde het radiostation Showers of Blessings (Regens van Zegeningen).

Vloedgolf

In de meer westelijk gelegen onafhankelijke staat Samoa kwamen vijf personen om het leven door de vloedgolf. Dat maakte een woordvoerder van het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken bekend.

Het dodental zal hoogstwaarschijnlijk nog naar boven worden bijgesteld.

Pago Pago

Bij Pago Pago, de ongeveer elfduizend inwoners tellende hoofdstad van Amerikaans Samoa, werden golven waargenomen die tot zes meter hoger waren dan het normale zeeniveau.

Het zeewater drong op sommige plekken tot anderhalve kilometer landinwaarts.

Waarschuwing

Het Amerikaanse Tsunami Waarschuwingscentrum heeft de tsunamiwaarschuwing voor onder meer Hawaii en Nieuw-Zeeland dinsdag ingetrokken.

Eerder werd er een tsunamiwaarschuwing afgegeven voor onder meer Amerikaans Samoa, Westelijk Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu, Fiji en Frans-Polynesië.

Aardbeving

Amerikaans Samoa ligt ongeveer halverwege tussen Nieuw-Zeeland en de Amerikaanse eilandstaat Hawaii.

De aardbeving gebeurde om 06.48 uur (lokale tijd). Veel eilanden in het gebied zijn klein en beschikken niet of nauwelijks over heuvels en bergen.

De aardbeving zou volgens de lokale autoriteiten anderhalve minuut hebben aangehouden. Ook zou zich een reeks naschokken hebben voorgedaan. Er wonen circa 65.000 mensen op Amerikaans Samoa.

Where the quake struck.

The quake struck southwest of Samoa and American Samoa in the South Pacific.

Pacific islanders have died after a massive undersea earthquake sent a tsunami crashing into tiny coastal villages.

The quake, with a magnitude up to 8.3, triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific Ocean, with coastal residents from Samoa to New Zealand fleeing to higher ground. There is no threat to the Australian mainland or island territories.

He said a journalist had reported the fatalities in the village of Fautasi, west of the capital Apia, and the toll could be "in the hundreds". Many Samoans were fleeing for higher ground.

Mr Hunter said the deaths were caused by the waves, not the earthquake that shook locals from their beds about dawn and lasted about three minutes.

"I really thought my house was going to come down around my ears," Mr Hunter said. "It was shaking violently. I’ve been through a few earthquakes but this is the worst I have seen."

An official for the US National Park Service has reportedly said at least one village was flattened in American Samoa, causing deaths, but there was no word yet on how many.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a warning for South Pacific countries including Fiji, New Zealand and Tonga. There was no threat to Australia, the Bureau of Meterology said. Waves were expected to reach New Zealand about 7am (AEST).

People in low-lying areas of New Zealand's North Island were urged to move to higher ground. Waikato Civil Defence and Emergency Management group issued the warning to residents in Raglan, Kawhia and coastal areas surrounding those towns to leave low-lying areas, Radio New Zealand reported.

On the east coast, Coromandel residents were told to immediately move to higher ground because of a potential metre-high tsunami.

The quake struck at 3.48am (AEST), or about dawn local time, at a depth of 33 kilometres, with the epicentre about 200 kilometres south-south-west of the Samoan capital Apia.

New Zealander Graeme Ansell said the beach village of Sau Sau Beach Fale, near Samoa's capital Apia, was levelled.

"It was very quick. The whole village has been wiped out," he told National Radio from a hill near Apia. "There's not a building standing. We've all clambered up hills and one of our party has a broken leg. There will be people in a great lot of need 'round here."

Another Apia resident, Keni Lesa, said people in the capital were moving inland.

"I'm taking my family to a safe place. Everyone's getting out of coastal areas," he said.

But Mr Lesa said there was no panic as "we have done a lot of training for this," living on a low-lying island in an earthquake prone area.

A tsunami swept into Pago Pago, capital of American Samoa, shortly after the earthquake, sending sea water surging inland about 100 metres before receding and leaving some cars stuck in mud.

"Sea-level readings indicate a tsunami was generated," the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

"It may have been destructive along coasts neat the earthquake epicentre and could also be a threat to more distant coasts. Authorities should take appropriate action in response to this possibility."

A tsunami watch was issued for Vanuatu, Nauru, the Marshall Islands, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia, Kosrae Island, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, Pohnpei in Micronesia, the Wake Islands, Pitcairn and the Midway Islands.

The USGS said the region was struck by a 5.6 magnitude quake about 20 minutes after the first.

Tsunami 'wipes out' villages in Samoa

ENTIRE villages in Samoa were 'wiped out' and people were missing, feared dead, after a powerful earthquake and tsunami hit the South Pacific, a Samoan journalist said.

Jona Tuiletufuga said they were receiving information of widespread destruction with possibly thousands of people left homeless.

The US Geological Survey said an 8.0 magnitude quake struck early this morning at a depth of 18km, 195 kilometres south of the Samoan capital Apia.

It was followed by waves of 1.57 metres in American Samoa and 0.7 metres in Samoa.

“So far there are no confirmed deaths but we are getting reports of missing people in areas were damage is extensive on the south and southeast coasts,” Mr Tuiletufuga said. “Entire villages have been wiped out.”

He said there were up to 70 villages in the worst-hit area and each housed from 300-800 people.

The Samoan capital Apia has been evacuated and thousands of people have been moved to higher ground.

Neighbouring American Samoa has also been severely damaged by the 'quake and tsunami and it is expected casualties will be high.

The general manager of Southseas Broadcasting, Joey Cummings, said cars were swept out to sea and the water reached the second floor of the Pago Plaza building in the capital Pago Pago.

A New Zealand tourist who called the station to appeal for help said he was looking over an area of destruction from the safety of a hill near Apia.

“We clambered up a hill and one of the party has a broken leg. We just need help, there will be people in a great lot of need around here, it's flattened.”

The centre had earlier issued a tsunami warning for a large swathe of the South Pacific including Fiji, New Zealand and Tonga.

In New Zealand, civil defence officials activated emergency plans and warned a tsunami up to one metre could hit parts of the east coast of the North Island. Residents were warned to be prepared to evacuate coastal areas.

The tsunami warning was also in effect for Niue Island, the Wallis and Futuna Islands, the Tokelau atolls, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, the Kermadec Islands, the Baker and Howland Islands, Jarvis Island, French Polynesia, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Kosrae Island, and the Palmyra Islands.

A tsunami watch was issued for Australia, Indonesia, Antarctica, Yap, Guam, The Northern Mariana Islands, Chuuk, Marcus Island, Pitcairn and the Midway Islands.

The USGS said the region was struck by a 5.6 magnitude quake around 20 minutes after the first, followed by a series of other aftershocks, measuring up to 5.8.
